A Year of Lovely Recessionary Dreams

January 15, 2009

Oh my! A whole year went by and our little recession that started in 2008 as a tiny whimper of anxiety has now blossomed into a strapping young thing. It makes one proud.

Thanks to the awesomeness of economic recoupling, if you take a look at any random financial market over the last year, you’re likely to see something like this:

Aig Bailout Aig Bailout Oh, Noes! Oh, Noes! Oh, Noes! Rate cuts - yay! Rate cuts - yay! Rate cuts - yay! Rate cuts - yay! Rate cuts - yay! Rate cuts - yay! Rate cuts - yay! Bailouts for all Bailouts for all Bailouts for all Bailouts for all Bailouts for all Bailouts for all Indymac fail Indymac fail Lehman Bros bankrupt Lehman Bros bankrupt Lehman Bros bankrupt Lehman Bros bankrupt Lehman Bros bankrupt Lehman Bros bankrupt Lehman Bros bankrupt Lehman Bros bankrupt Bear Stearns goes bust Bear Stearns goes bust Bear Stearns goes bust Bear Stearns goes bust Bear Stearns goes bust Bear Stearns goes bust Rate Cut Rate Cut Rate Cut Rate Cut Rate Cut Rate Cut Rate Cut Rate Cut The fundamentals of our economy are strong The fundamentals of our economy are strong The fundamentals of our economy are strong The fundamentals of our economy are strong The fundamentals of our economy are strong The fundamentals of our economy are strong The fundamentals of our economy are strong The fundamentals of our economy are strong The fundamentals of our economy are strong The fundamentals of our economy are strong

Oh noes! Capitalism is 50% off! Everything must go.

But I found it striking that by simply inverting the financial disaster graph, we get an accurate visual representation of how my year actually progressed. Look:

Grandma dies Grandma dies Grandma dies Grandma dies Move in with Jason Move in with Jason Move in with Jason Move in with Jason Photo Business Photo Business Photo Business Photo Business Camping is fun Camping is fun Camping is fun Camping is fun Camping is fun Unemployment Unemployment Unemployment Unemployment Unemployment Dog fucking loves milk Dog fucking loves milk Dog fucking loves milk Roadtrip USA Roadtrip USA Roadtrip USA Roadtrip USA Roadtrip USA Walter Sold Walter Sold Walter Sold Discover sunhats Discover sunhats Camping trip from hell Camping trip from hell Camping trip from hell Camping trip from hell Camping trip from hell Camping trip from hell Launch photobook Launch photobook Launch photobook Launch photobook Launch photobook 365 Doggy Days 365 Doggy Days 365 Doggy Days fly into snowbank fly into snowbank fly into snowbank fly into snowbank

The year started rather uninspiring. But then it just took off — I started new a new photo project, finished putting together a book, got naked on islands, went on road trips, discovered rangefinders, sunhats, and rainy days. And because I suddenly have tons of free time, I even got a bit more serious about the whole photography thing. Best of all, today I ate so much Christmas candy I can barely move. It was 50% off. Score!

We obviously need more financial disasters to improve the quality of our lives. Thus, I’m eagerly anticipating the rest of 2009.

Unemployment was better than the launch of your photo book?

I’m glad your life-a-graph is happier now than last year (:

I’ll tell Chris you’re back in town… he’ll gladly drag you and Martin around in the cold to take pictures… LOL

Unemployment is pretty awesome :). I suddenly have tons of time to work on personal projects and fantasize about future careers. It was frightening initially, but now I feel suddenly liberated.

So yes, photo-taking is on!
