Image Mapping

May 10, 2005

You thought GoogleMaps was cool? Just wait until you see what it can do with Flickr photos. Geobloggers is a new service that combines the goodness of Flicker and GoogleMaps, allowing photo junkies to map out the location of their images. Individual photos on Flickr can be tagged with longitude and latitude coordinates and then displayed within their spatial context on GoogleMaps.

I started geo tagging my Flickr photos late last night and the process was so fucking addictive I didn’t fall asleep until 3 in the morning. This is what downtown Waterloo looks like, and these pictures, which aren’t mine, show how pretty Toronto is. In my mind, I always associate photos with physical locations, so I found it incredibly compelling to be able visualize them on a map.

Geo tagging has a lot of potential — it grounds digital photos in reality. Soon I will show you what my road trips look like and take you to all the places I’ve been. Eventually, I want to implement a similar system for the photos on this site (not just my flickr photostream). That would be rad!

If you’re using Firefox, and you want to add geo tags to your flickr pictures, you may want to install these greasemonkey scripts — they simplified my life.

What am I not-doing-correctly….
I just get a smattering of yellowmarkertags on Firefox and Safari.

Am I supposed to be seeing some sort of direct photographic graphical representation, or just the markers?

Click the yellow flags in the margin (or in the body of the page) and you’ll get a thumbnail of the image at that location. To get to the flickr photo, follow the link from the margin or from the pop-up on the map.

Here’s what you should get:

Since Geobloggers just came out about a week ago, it’s not as intuitive as it could be …
